The management of the Atiwa East District Assembly in the Eastern Region, in collaboration with some residents of the community, undertook a clean-up exercise at the Anyinam market and its surrounding areas during the national sanitation day exercise on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
The security agencies in the district, including the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Investigation Bureau, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Blue Water Guard, all participated in this important clean-up exercise.

In his address, the District Chief Executive of the Assembly, Ernest Owusu Ntim, expressed gratitude to the participants for coming together to help clean the market and some sections of the street.
“The Government of Ghana, led by President John Dramani Mahama, is doing its best to make the country clean, but cannot clean individual households, which is why everybody needs to fight the filth in their small way to stay healthy,” he said.

He further stated that the Atiwa District Assembly has formed a task force that would be conducting monitoring exercises in the various marketplaces in the area to arrest and sanction those who leave behind garbage and go home after selling.
For his part, the environmental officer for the Assembly, Simon Amewuda, revealed that the reintroduction of the national sanitation day, which is held on the first Saturday of every month, will help reduce communicable diseases in the community.

He revealed that in 2025, his department sent more than 25 people to court over sanitation-related issues, of which 24 were prosecuted and fined a certain amount of money.
“It will serve as a deterrent to others because we are doing this to protect our environment from contracting an outbreak of disease in the District,” he believes.
