Divisional Officer Grade Two (DO II) Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service, is urging the general public to prioritize safe cooking habits to significantly reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.

According to him, staying focused while cooking and avoiding distractions can make a significant difference.

In an interview with DJ HITMAN on Anidaso wo ho ma obiara morning show on DLfm 106.9 on Thursday, February 29, 2026, DO II Desmond Ackah emphasized that most home fires can be prevented by simply being mindful while cooking.

He suggested using portable cylinders responsibly and having a backup plan to avoid rushing to refill cylinders while cooking.

DO II Ackah also advised against using a refilled gas cylinder immediately after refilling, recommending a 30-minute to one-hour waiting period to ensure safety.

Furthermore, he encouraged everyone to acquire at least two cylinders to eliminate the need for rushed refills.

DO II Desmond Ackah also highlighted the importance of proper market planning to prevent fires.

He noted that well-planned markets with adequate infrastructure such as adequate firefighting means such as fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, hose reels, and early detection devices, wider alleys, exits and escape routes can significantly reduce the risk of fires.

By adopting these simple yet effective measures, Ghanaians can work together to create a safer, more fire-free future.
