Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan was among host of former Ghana internationals who trooped to the funeral to pay their last respect to Christian Atsu.
Gyan, who played with the former Newcastle winger from 2012 to 2019, paid a beautiful tribute to Atsu at his funeral by performing with his band, “Asa Band” at the Forecourt of the Statehouse in Accra.
Songs performed include, Noble Nketia’s “Yesu Wo Do Yi”, Cindy Thompson’s “Awawa Do” and Margaret Mensah’s “Awurade Kasa”.
Before he took over the microphone, Asamoah said Atsu was someone he loved dearly. He disclosed that it was Atsu’s wish to come to his home to see him performing but unfortunately it never happened.
Atsu, 31, died tragically in Tukey, following a powerful earthquake that hit the country in February, killing more than 50,000 people.
He spent most of his career playing in the English Premier League for clubs including Chelsea, Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth and Everton FC.
He was also capped 65 times for Ghana, and helped the national side reach the finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea – where he was awarded goal and player of the tournament.
