GWCL Northern Regional Director Addresses Water Crisis in Tamale

The Northern Regional Director of Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr. Stephen Amihere-Mensah, has assured the general public that he will address the water crisis in the Northern Regional Capital, Tamale.

In an interview with DL FM News, Mr. Amihere-Mensah acknowledged the issue of insufficient access to potable water supply in some communities in the Tamale metropolis. He enumerated several reasons for this, including population increase.

He stated that the population of Tamale exceeds the capacity of water demand and supply, making it extremely difficult for the company to meet the needs of the people as far as their service is concerned.

Another reason was the menace of the sand winning at the water plant at Dalun. Contractors and individuals use the place as their source of sand supply for their construction works there by polluting the water body with their tipper trucks which have affected the operation of the plant’s machinery, even though efforts to addressing this is gaining grounds via engaging them with education.

He also expressed concern with regards to the prevalence of illegal water connections leading to losses for the company. He highlighted cases of bypassing meters for commercial purposes and urged citizens to report such incidents for investigation and prosecution.

Mr Stephen assured that collaborative efforts between engineers from Accra and Tamale are far advance to enhancing water supply to the good people in the Tamale metropolis and its environs and that little patience and understanding is required.

Regarding allegations of staff owning private water tankers for business transactions, the Regional director clarified that such tankers are used to supply water to institutions and hospitals during the dry season at the expense of the water company. He encouraged residents to verify information before making public accusations.
